Speaker Perez sparked Dagupan’s progress — VM Kua
HAD it not been for Republic Act 170 authored by the late Speaker Eugenio Perez, Dagupan would not be in such a lofty position that it holds today in the country.
This was how Acting City Mayor Bryan Kua described the significance of the Speaker’s role during the laying of wreath at the foot of the bust of Speaker Perez at the former Perez Market named in his honor last November 13, marking his 127th birthday anniversary.
Vice Mayor Kua said RA 170 created Dagupan as the first chartered city in Pangasinan in Region 1 and it remains as the only independent component city in the region.
November 13 was declared a special non-working holiday pursuant to Republic Act 6721 signed by President Corazon Aquino on March 20, 1989 that declared November 13 of each year as a special public holiday in Pangasinan.
Only six square kilometers in land area and with a dense population of 180,000, Dagupan went on to become the center not only of education, hospital care and economy but as the mall shopping center in Region 1.
With its prized agricultural product, bangus, it is celebrating Bangus Festival yearly, which is its top tourism come-on. (Butch Uka)
