P238-M bangus breeding, hatchery facility to rise in Bolinao
THE provincial government is gearing up to construct a P238.992 million World Bank-assisted bangus breeding and hatchery facility in Barangay Arnedo, Bolinao town to enable Pangasinan to produce more than 100 million bangus fry and over 48 million bangus larvae annually.
Gov. Ramon Guico III said the construction is scheduled to commence in 2024, following the ceremonial launch of the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) scale-up on November 6. The event was attended by Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya, and Provincial Planning and Development Office OIC Rowena Ignacio.
“Karamihan kasi ng fingerlings ng bangus ay ini-import pa nila from Indonesia and from other provinces. At least ito, locally sourced na ang kanilang fingerlings,” Gov. Guico said.
The project is poised to benefit 17 municipalities in Pangasinan, particularly 39,399 fishersfolk, 63 bangus nursery operators, and one bangus satellite hatchery operator.
The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg) said the project’s components included seven units of broodstock tanks, 120 units of larval rearing tanks, 24 units of rotifer tanks, an administrative and laboratory building, staff quarters, a triplex building, a two-unit pump house, and an intake pump.
The World Bank will fund 80 percent of the costs, and the national and provincial governments contribute 10 percent each.
The Provincial Information Office (PIO) revealed that the western towns of Bolinao, Anda, and Sual, accounting for about 80 percent of Pangasinan’s bangus production, still rely on imported fry from Indonesia.
Pangasinan is the country’s leading producer of bangus, contributing over 28 percent to the country’s total production. (Eva Visperas)
