New marine-protected areas seen in 3 W. Pangasinan
A NETWORK of marine-protected areas will be established in Alaminos City, Sual and Anda for food security, sustainable livelihood and economic growth, climate change, adaptation and mitigation.
Provincial resolution no. 1619-2023 passed by the provincial board authorized Gov. Ramon Guico III to enter into and sign a memorandum of agreements between and among the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), the City of Alaminos, and the municipalities of Anda and Sual for the establishment of a network of Marine-Protected Areas to be known as the City of Alaminos-Municipalities of Sual and Anda Marine Protected Area Network (CAMSA MPA Network).
Third District Board Member Vici Ventanilla authored the resolution to preserve, protect and conserve the coastal and fishery resources in the three local governments.
Marilyn Racoma, chief of DENR’s Conservation and Development Division told board members that the locally- proclaimed marine protected areas in the three coastal LGUs mentioned are being considered for inclusion in the MPA Network.
Racoma said inclusion of the three in the MPA Network will mean more and will create a synergy of strategies among the LGUs.
“The MPA Network is very important because it will enhance the condition of our coastal areas especially in towns where our coastal resources are rich but very vulnerable to exploitation if not guarded well,” she added.
She told the SP that where there is networking, there is acceleration of protection, wider and better productivity of coastal habitats, and which translates to higher produce of fishes in the coastal habitats that will benefit the small fishermen to support their livelihood.
She cited opportunities for incentives, awards, grants both from local and international groups for the network. (Eva Visperas)
