COMELEC orders 150 candidates: Explain or else!
FOR ALLEGED PREMATURE CAMPAIGNING
DESPITE the official start of the campaign period on Thursday, October 19, over a hundred candidates in Pangasinan were alleged to have conducted premature campaigning.
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has issued show cause orders to over 150 candidates in the province for their alleged involvement in premature campaigning.
Atty. Marino Salas, provincial election supervisor who disclosed this action during an interview on Tuesday, October 17, clarified that the show cause orders were issued by the COMELEC Central Office upon receipt of allegations and complaints on social media about premature campaigning of these candidates.
The candidates are required to explain why disqualification cases should not be filed against them, said Salas, who emphasized that only the COMELEC central office has the authority to issue show cause orders and initiate disqualification cases.
The provincial, municipal, and city elections offices only issue summons, notices, and show cause orders to candidates.
Salas reminded candidates to adhere to local ordinances and laws during campaign period, particularly not to spend more than P5 per voter in their respective barangays. (Ahikam Pasion)
