Col. Versoza: Most residents oppose seawall project
LINGAYEN residents are expressing strong opposition to the proposed construction of a seawall along Binmaley and Lingayen Beach, according to P/Colonel Sonny Versoza (retired).
In an interview with Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan on September 27, Versoza, an officer of the Pangasinan PNP Retirees Association Inc., revealed that he has received numerous complaints from residents who are concerned that their livelihoods could be severely impacted by the construction of the proposed seawall.
One of the primary concerns voiced by residents is the potential negative effect on the livelihoods of local fishermen. Additionally, the town’s tourism industry, which attracts beachgoers, especially during weekends and holidays, could also suffer due to the construction.
The former Dagupan police chief also argued that the project was not properly executed, pointing out that there was no public consultation conducted regarding the seawall. He also noted the absence of an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the project.
In response to claims that the seawall could prevent flooding, Versoza contested this assertion, stating that flooding along the beach area is typically short-lived, as the water recedes quickly. He says that he is ‘determined to protect and preserve their livelihoods, as well as the scenic beauty of the beach area.’
It is worth noting that the Provincial Board has issued a resolution to halt the project until further studies can be conducted. (Ahikam Pasion)
