MBTF ignores SP majority as elevated road segments open
A WEEK after the majority in the Sangguniang Panlungsod adopted a resolution asking her to stop the projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways in Dagupan, Mayor Belen Fernandez announced the opening of the west-bound lane of the newly elevated A.B. Fernandez Avenue East, while the already completed east-bound lane will be opened soon.
Completely ignoring the resolution of the SP majority, Mayor Fernandez inspected the progress of work of the ongoing road elevation and construction of drainage systems in the business district by the DPWH.
According to City Engineer Josephine Corpuz, who accompanied Mayor Fernandez during the project inspection, once elevation of roads and constructing wider drainage system are completed, the DPWH will build two-meter sidewalks on the elevated roads.
She said the new sidewalks will address the concern of property owners, particularly businessmen, who fear losing customers without appropriate access to their stores.
Corpuz also pointed out that Arellano Street, M.H. Del Pilar Street and A. B. Fernandez Avenue up to the Quintos Bridge will also be raised to the same level as A.B. Fernandez Avenue East (Barrera-Tambac segment).
Decorp also vowed to relocate all electric poles standing on the way of the drainage canals being built by DPWH.
At the same time, Mayor Fernandez told affected buildings that once the project is completed, they can connect their downspouts to the widened drainage canals on both sides of the roads.
The Phinma University of Pangasinan was the first big establishment to express its plan to connect its downspouts to the new drainage system to prevent flooding in its premises.
Meanwhile, Fernandez again clarified that the elevation of roads in Dagupan City that the SP majority wanted to stop, is part of a master plan of the DPWH to help ease flooding not only in Dagupan City but in neighboring towns.
On the drawing board is the elevation of the flood-prone Tapuac-Lucao Road-Burgos Street-Perez Boulevard intersection, whose drainage canals are expected to disgorge its water down the Pantal River at Magsaysay Bridge.
Fernandez said the elevation of flood-prone barangay roads cannot be pursued because its budget is included in the 2023 annual city budget of Dagupan that the majority in the SP continues to block. (Leonardo Micua)
