MBTF highlights ‘Bye bye Gutom’ at SDG Summit in NYC

DAGUPAN City’s Mayor Belen Fernandez, as one of the representatives of the Philippines, participated in the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) World Summit, held from September 16 to 22 at the United Nations General Headquarters in New York, USA.

The summit, organized as a precursor to the UN General Assembly, was conducted under the auspices of the Global Task Force (GTF) of Local Governments, headquartered in Barcelona, Spain.

Mayor Fernandez received an invitation to attend the event on September 6, 2023, from the GTF and the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).

According to the GTF, the SDG Summit provided an opportunity for local and regional governments to present their strategies in aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a framework established by the United Nations.

Accompanied by City Legal Officer Aurora Valle, Mayor Fernandez showcased her initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and hunger through the ‘Bye Bye Gutom’ program, scholarships for children from disadvantaged families, and various efforts to enhance public health while creating job opportunities.

Mayor Fernandez also shared her insights on the significance of the SDG Summit, stating that it provided a platform for officials from national, regional, and local governments worldwide to discuss their ongoing efforts, challenges, and opportunities in addressing critical issues facing their populations and humanity as a whole.

“As a representative of the Philippines, I stand in solidarity with my fellow 80,000 mayors worldwide in supporting the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals. I believe these goals can lead to a world where poverty, hunger, and disease are eradicated, offering every individual the opportunity to thrive and meet their needs,” Fernandez emphasized.

Fernandez highlighted the 2023 SDG Summit as the largest gathering of local and national governments, civil society organizations, private sectors, youth, women, and other stakeholders from across the globe, all playing a pivotal role in advancing the SDGs. (Leonardo Micua)
