“Lolos” as Municipal Traffic Safety Officers in Mangaldan schools
THIRTY-one senior citizens were recently hired as Municipal Traffic Safety Officers (MTSO) in Mangaldan for deployment starting Sept. 1, in 27 public schools.
Their mission: Ensure traffic safety and order in public schools.
The Mangaldan local government formed the Municipal Traffic Safety Office through the initiative of Mayor Bona Fe De Vera-Parayno and the Mangaldan Local School Board (LSB) starting this school year.
Prior to their deployment, they were given a briefing and orientation at the Municipal Wellness Center, jointly facilitated by the Municipal Traffic Regulations Group, Public Order and Safety Office, Human Resource Management Office and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
The mayor’s directive was to hire mostly senior citizens belonging to low-income families and are still employable.
The Municipal Information Office said the creation of the MTSO program seeks to eliminate discrimination against senior citizens as burden to families.
“With the said job opportunity, the senior citizen traffic enforcers will feel validated and relevant as productive members of the society” it said.
An MTSO will receive P5,000 monthly pay funded by the LSB budget.
“This is my new program. Meron na kayong trabaho para bantayan ang mga kabataan especially mga apo-apo niyo na rin. Inaasahan kayo ng ating mga eskuwelahan. At alam ko nasisiyahan kayo dahil ayaw niyong nandiyan lang sa bahay,” the mayor said.
The principals of the public schools thanked Mayor Parayno for helping them promote safety of their students, teachers, parents and other residents who cross the pedestrian lanes within the school zones. (Eva Visperas)
