Fisherman’s daughter graduates as PSU summa cum laude

A 22-year-old daughter of a fisherman in Bolinao town who holds a degree in Bachelor of Science in Mathematics graduated as summa cum laude at the Pangasinan State University-Lingayen campus.

Monica Burbano earned a General Weighted Average of 1.20 and made history as the first summa cum laude with a B.S. degree in Math and the only second summa cum laude graduate in PSU’s academic history.

Monica’s father, Wilson Burbano Jr. is a fisherman while her mom, Lolita sells fish and works as househelp.

Monica, a salutatorian in Bolinao Integrated School, said that during her first semester in PSU, her general average was 1.41 and thus became a dean’s lister. It was then the start of her dream to graduate with honors.

As a scholar of the Department of Science and Technology, she needed to maintain high grades to keep her scholarship.

Being born to a poor family, she said it served as her motivation to give her best in her studies.

Monica wasted no time after her graduation and enrolled in a university outside Pangasinan for her master’s degree so she can eventually be part of her Alma Mater someday as a professor.

She had this advice to students aspiring to achieve Latin honors: Do your best at all times so you’ll not have regrets later on. There will be times when you will be tested and must struggle a lot… don’t lose hope, don’t give up… Whatever you achieve in life, always be grateful to God.

Meanwhile, a Facebook post from the official page of PSU said its president, Dr. Elbert Galas, congratulated the 1,768 graduates for the Cluster B of the 2023 PSU Graduation Rites held in CSI Stadia in Dagupan City.

PSU Lingayen takes pride in its record for being the campus with a summa cum laude, Monica Burbano, and 152 Latin honor awardees.

Sen. Francis Tolentino who was the guest of honor and speaker, joined the graduates virtually and extended his warmest wishes and pieces of advice. (Eva Visperas)
