PHO intensifies monitoring of gastroenteritis, leptospirosis, typhoid cases
THE Provincial Health Office (PHO) continues to intensify its surveillance and monitoring of cases of gastroenteritis, leptospirosis and typhoid after noting a high increase in reported cases since July.
Dr. Anna de Guzman, provincial health officer, told last Monday’s Question Hour of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan session that there were already 4,809 cases with 15 mortalities due to gastroenteritis since January, or 70 percent higher compared to last year’s record which was 4,100 cases with 23 mortalities.
De Guzman said Jerry Can water containers were distributed in all the 47 towns and cities of Pangasinan, and hypochlorite solution and chlorine granules, especially in evacuation centers.
Typhoid fever already recorded 101 cases but without mortality compared to last year’s 88 cases, or 14 percent higher.
She called the attention of sanitary inspectors in all towns and cities to strengthen their monitoring of vendors selling ‘palamig’ (cold drinks from mixture of ice, water, milk, sliced gelatin and sugar) and also for the food they serve because typhoid is due to contaminated water and food.
The PHO also recorded 26 leptospirosis cases and six mortalities as of August 14 and this prompted a more intensified surveillance and monitoring not just in 14 hospitals operated by the provincial government but also including private hospitals. (Eva Visperas)
