Pangasinan warned of ‘dangerous’ heat index ahead
PANGASINAN is set to see hotter days ahead, as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned of further rain-less days, despite the wet season at its supposed peak.
Gener Quitlong, weather specialist of the Agno River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (ARBFFWC) said Pangasinan will consistently reach 40-ish heat index this week.
The province’s peak heat index at 46 degrees last August 13 has been Pangasinan’s hottest this month
While not reaching ‘Extreme Danger’ levels such as experienced in Aurora province, whose heat index reached 69 degrees on Monday, August 14, the heat index in Dagupan City is still considered ‘Dangerous’ by PAGASA standards.
Quitlong urged the public to limit outdoor activities and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This will help prevent heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke.
“We urge everyone not to stay under the sun for too long”, said Quitlong.
Despite the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) blowing, it only affects Southern Luzon up to Mindanao – leaving Central and Northern Luzon in scorching temperatures.
Quitlong added that the current hot condition may be attributed to the effects of the El Niño phenomenon.
He, however, warned that the ‘real’ and ‘intense’ impact will be felt beginning the final quarter of 2023. (Ahikam Pasion)
