Tsunami may hit Pangasinan in the future – DOST

A TSUNAMI may eventually hit Pangasinan in the near future, which could sink coastal towns, particularly Dagupan City, according to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

This was bared by DOST Secretary Dr. Renato Solidum during the ‘Alerto!Rehiyon Uno’ Forum on Geological Hazards in Region 1 on Thursday, July 20.

Solidum said this scenario is likely to happen after a strong earthquake occurs in coastal areas and cited the need to install a Tsunami Early Warning System across coastal towns in the province.

However, Pangasinan only has only one Tsunami Early Warning System installed  in Bolinao town.

The Warning System can warn residents 15 minutes before the tsunami hits.

This way, the public could evacuate and could prevent casualties.

As for Dagupan City, Solidum said individuals may evacuate to high-rise buildings, despite the liquefaction of the city’s soil.

“Maaaring lumikas sa high-rise buildings basta’t tama ang pagkakadisenyo nito”, said Solidum.

It will be recalled that the construction of a seven-storey building in Dagupan City was temporarily halted, after it was verified to be in a liquefaction area.

“Kung sakaling lumindol nang malakas, guguho lamang ang gusali at yun ang kailangan ikabahala”, Solidum added.

The DOST warned that a number of buildings and houses not only in Region I but throughout the country, were not built by engineers, and therefore, vulnerable to earthquakes. (Ahikam Pasion)
