Pangasinan leads region in road mishaps

PANGASINAN does not have not the safest route in the Ilocos Region based on the data on vehicular accidents recorded by the region’s Philippine National Police (PNP).

According to P/Colonel Christopher Acop, acting Deputy Regional Director for Operation, during the “3rd Kapihan Sa DOH” with the theme “Motoristang Responsable, Safety First Lagi Para sa Healthy Pilipinas” held in San Fernando City, La Union last week, that Pangasinan topped the list with 984 Vehicular Traffic Incidents (VTIs) out of 1,521 total VTIs recorded in the region.

As expected, motorcycle incidents topped the list of VTIs per category with 1,123 records, four-wheeled vehicles logged 996 incidents, tricycles with 366, while six-wheeler trucks above recorded 75 VTIs.

Police statistics reveal more male drivers involved in VTIs with 332, compared to women at only 167, and 516 drivers and riders involved in VTIs did not have driver’s licenses.

Last 2022, the PNP recorded 3,257 road crashes, with an average of 63 VTIs occurring weekly. However, an increase in weekly average was noticed, from January to April 30, an average of 69 VTIs per week are being recorded. It however surged to 83 since May 1.

Acop urged the motorists and riders to drive safely, to follow traffic regulations, to keep their cool while on the road, be alert, and be considerate.

Meanwhile, Patricia Mendoza, Land Transportation Office (LTO) Regional Office I Transportation Regulation Officer said their agency is making steps to refine the process of applying or renewing  driver’s license.

Engineer Josefina Oamar, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region I head for Maintenance, said road repairs and improvements are also currently being done, as better roads may help decrease road accidents. (Ahikam Pasion)
