100 PDLs, 30 PERSONNEL PASS DRUG TESTS

SOME 100 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Male Dormitory (BJMP-MD) and its 30 personnel were tested randomly and all yielded negative results.

This determined the tests facilitated by the Department of Health-Center for Health Development-1 during the visit of Secretary of Interior and Local Government Benjamin Abalos to Dagupan for his BIDA program.

Jail Supt. Roque Constantino Sison II said this drug tests were done in support of the BIDA program of Secretary Abalos which stands for Buhay ay Ingatan. Droga’y Ayawan launched in Dagupan via a fun run participated in by more than 13,000 runners.

Both Abalos BJMP Regional Director JCSupt. Jolly Taguiam Jr. who visited the Dagupan BJMP-MD, were elated by the zero drug incidence in the area, Sison said.

“He (Abalos) was impressed with how our program succeeded in maintaining a drug-free facility,” the city’s BJMP chief said.

Sison said the regular routine in the anti-drug activities is the strict search and inspection procedures in all packages coming in, physical check of visitors, presence of regular greyhound and quarterly or random drug test in coordination with the DOH Region 1.

He added that they also implement various welfare programs for all drug offender-PDLs, i.e., education by enrolling them in the Alternative Learning System, in Technical Education and Skills Development Authority courses and even a college course.

A Therapeutic Community Modality Program and drug symposium among their PDLs in preparation for their eventual release are also conducted for the PDLS.

There were 688 PDLs in their Male Dormitory as of May 2.

Sison said almost 60 percent of the PDLs are facing drug-related cases. (Eva Visperas)
