Expect El Niño to create serious drought anew – PAGASA
THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially declared the end of La Niña and has warned the public with the onset of El Niño.
On Wednesday, March 15, PAGASA said in a statement that while a favorable dry weather is anticipated during March-June with below-normal rainfall conditions, El Niño can negatively impact on the country’s water and agriculture source that will result in droughts and dry spells.
Gener Quitlong of the PAGASA Agno River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (ARBFFWC) in Rosales town warned that the water level on San Roque Dam is still below its normal water level.
As of Thursday morning, March 16, San Roque Dam is 245.30 meters above sea level (masl) or 34 meters below its 280 normal water level.
“Kung hindi uulanin lalo pang bababa ang water level nito… medyo mahihirapan tayo rito,” he said.
In 2021, the dam reached its critical record low 226.5 masl that resulted in the stoppage of power generation of the hydroelectric dam in the area and seriously affected irrigation of 32,000 hectares of farm land in 14 towns and cities in Pangasinan.
The San Roque Dam receives its supply of water upstream, from the water released by the Binga and Ambuklao Dams.
Meanwhile, PAGASA predicts one tropical cyclone to form within the Philippine Area of Responsibility this March. (Ahikam Pasion)
