Clearing city rivers of illegal fish pens minimizes flooding – MBTF

THE campaign of the Dagupan City LGU to rid its rivers of illegal structures continues with 18 illegal fish pens already demolished to further clear the way and enable flood waters to easily exit to the sea.

This was reported by Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez during her program Tatak Unliserbisyo over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan on Wednesday morning, November 30.

Fernandez said the elimination of illegal structures blocking the city’s waterways is necessary as it is one of the primary causes of flooding in city streets.

Ito ang isang cause ng baha sa Dagupan dahil yung takbo ng tubig palabas sa mouth of the river napapabagal dahil sa mga structure,” said Fernandez.

She also stressed the importance of the demolition of fish pens and fish cages that do not conform with the restrictions provided in the ordinance.

Since the distribution of notices of violations (NOV) to owners of the illegal fish pens last July, a total of 18 structures have been dismantled, some voluntarily while others with the assistance of the Bantay Ilog Task Force.

Fishpen owners, upon receipt of the NOVs sign a waiver allowing the Bantay Ilog personnel to dismantle their illegal structures if they are unable to remove these themselves.

The recent issued NOVs gave November 30 as deadline to voluntarily remove their illegal structures, failing that the Bantay Ilog will demolish these.

Fernandez stressed that the legitimate fish cages help make the city’s river ecosystem thrive. (Ahikam Pasion)
