PASEO DE BELEN, BATTLE OF BANDS BACK

MAYOR Belen Fernandez named Councilor  Michael Fernandez as chair of Dagupan City Fiesta 2022 and the “Pasco de Dagupan”, which actually already started with the ceremonial lighting of Christmas decors at the Quintos Bridge, lighting of the Giant Christmas Tree in front of the city museum and the illumination of the city plaza  premises on November 18 personally joined by Senator Imee Marcos.

In her “Kapehan, Talakayan at Balitaan” on Wednesday at Tim Horton’s Coffee house, Mayor Fernandez said the month-long city fiesta in honor of St. John, the Evangelist, the patron saint of Dagupan, as well as the “Pasco de Dagupan” will incorporate some activities lined up for the 75th Diamond Celebration of Dagupan City.

However, she said, that in view of the economic crisis, these activities will be made as simple and modest as possible but very meaningful.

Among the activities lined up for these three events include an inter-city basketball tournament participated in by teams from the 31 barangays, Battle of the Bands, Christmas caroling competition, nightly public balls and reunions by different groups and schools at the city plaza as well as carnival and the holding of the Paseo De Belen with each of the barangays competing in having the most beautiful and attractive nativity scene.

In support of the activities, the Sangguniang Panlungsod passed an ordinance temporarily closing Galvan Street (up to corner Nueva Street), as well as Jovellanos Extension, and Zamora Street up to corner of Jovellanos Street from November 15 to January 30, 2023 in celebration of the “Pasco de Dagupan” and to allow the city “to enter into contracts in relation thereto as an effective means of spurring economic.”

Mayor Fernandez said she waited for the ordinance closing the streets passed before allowing the setting up of a baratillo and a food strip lest the government is charged before the Ombudsman like what happened to official of the past city administration that closed roads and streets sans city ordinances authorizing it.

Ordinance No. 2252-2022 sponsored by Councilor Marcelino Fernandez and jointly seconded by Councilors Alvin Coquia and Alfie Fernandez, said the celebration of “Pasco de Dagupan” activities will not be limited to trade fairs, food bazaars and flea markets or baratillo.

Councilor Fernandez said one of the most effective and viable ways to spur economic activity in the central business district of the city is to allow the operation of “baratillo” and food strip . (Leonardo Micua)
