More kids suffer from hand-foot-mouth disease
THE Department of Health issued an alert to Pangasinan residents after 90 cases of human hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) were been recorded in Pangasinan.
Burgos already has 25 active HFMD cases after four confirmed cases were initially recorded that prompted the local Rural Health Unit (RHU) to launch disinfection campaign.
Investigation showed the outbreak occurred in a local school in town, where 11 students tested positive. Other schools soon recorded cases.
Other towns that recorded HFMD cases Calasiao, Umingan, Tayug, Balungao, and Rosales.
The Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PPHO) said most of the cases are children aged five to eleven years old.
HFMD was initially in the province last March, but the surge in cases was noted in September when 35 cases of HFMD were recorded.
Municipal Health Offices have been directed to conduct information dissemination programs to contain the increase in number of cases, and to monitor handwashing program in schools.
Individuals suffering from HFMD symptoms are strongly advised to seek medical assistance.
A patient suffering from HFMD may develop painful sores in his mouth, and itchy rashes on the hands, feet, and other parts of the body and usually starts with fever, reduced appetite, sore throat, and lethargy.
While HFMD is usually not serious, it is contagious. (Ahikam Pasion)
