COMMUTERS are expected to pay more for their jeepney and bus fares on October 3.

This, after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) approved the petition for the hike:

  • Minimum fare in traditional PUJs for the first four kilometers will be P12, and P.30 for every succeeding kilometer.
  • Modern PUJs will charge P14 minimum fare, while provincial buses will charge P11. Taxis will then add a PHP 5 in their flag-down rate.

LTFRB Chair Cheloy Garafil said the latest round of increase will not be permanent and can be withdrawn if oil prices drop drastically but he clarified an appropriate benchmark level, depending on the movement of oil prices will be established soon.

Bernard Tuliao, head of the Alliance of United Transport Organization Provincewide (AUTOPRO) – Pangasinan, said the fare hike will help jeepney drivers in their daily struggle.

Meanwhile, Dagupan City Loop Transport Cooperative President Jessie Quiroz said the fare hike being granted is not enough.

Masyado nang mataas ang presyo ng produktong petrolyo, baka kulangin”, he said. (Ahikam Pasion)
