Calasiao residents gearing for continued flooding
STILL THE HABAGAT SEASON
RESIDENTS in Calasiao continue to watch out for flooding in their communities because of the habagat (southwest monsoon rains) and rivers have been rising and in the aftermath of the Tropical Storm Florita last week.
Kristine Joy Soriano, spokesperson for the Calasiao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC), said water levels may continue to rise if torrential rains continue to pour non-stop upstream.
Water from upstream are estimated to flow and reach Sinocalan and Marusay Rivers for 24 to 36 hours after the downpour.
On Wednesday, August 24, the water level at Marusay peaked at an alarming 8.5ft Above Normal Level (ANL). Soriano said this was at critical stages.
Meanwhile, the Agno River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (ARBFFWC) at the Barangay Tumana in Rosales town said the Sinocalan River reached 7.64 meters, compared to its normal 6.9 meters ANL.
As of Wednesday last week, portions of Mancup, Talibaew, Longos, Lumbang, Lasip, and Nalsian barangays in Calasiao were already flooded. (Lumbang was worst affected, with four-feet-deep floodwaters).
However, while evacuation centers, particularly the Regional Evacuation Center located at Barangay Gabon, were prepared to receive evacuees, no one was evacuated or requested for evacuation.
Even if ‘Florita’ had exited, Soriano said they are still expecting further flooding because the habagat season is not over. (Ahikam Pasion)
