Baratillo’s extended illegal occupation of streets finally ends

By June 19, 2022Top Stories

AT long last, Galvan and Jovellanos Streets were finally cleared of the overstaying street bazaar called “baratillo” on June 15, exactly 15 days before Belen Fernandez takes her oath of office as new mayor of Dagupan City.

Cleared, too, was a small strip in front of the parking area of CSI Market Square, occupied by fruit and bazaar item vendors.

Aguedo Sta. Maria, city market administrator, was quoted as saying in a television interview that stallholders at the baratillo sought another month of extension but the city government turned it down.

The vendors were already previously given one month extension when their contract expired last May 15 after two and a half month of operation.

The baratillo stalls congested Galvan Street and spilled over to the parking lot of CSI Market Square since March this year.

Sta. Maria said the vendors in front of the parking lot of CSI Market Square were relocated to the already cleared Galvan Street to resume their business.

Now, Bonuan-bound jeepneys are able to pass through Galvan Street again to pick up their passengers and the entry point to CSI Market Square was eventually cleared and its parking lot restored.

Meanwhile, Marlon Velasco Aquino, a concerned resident and taxpayer of Barangay Malued in Dagupan City, recently filed administrative and criminal complaints against Mayor Lim, City Treasurer Romelita Alcantara, Public Order and Safety Office chief Robert Christopher Erfe-Mejia and Sta. Maria for closing the streets for the operation of the baratillos without authority from the Sanggunian Panlungsod.

The city treasurer has not reported any revenue from the stallholders in the baratillo.  (Leonardo Micua)
