W.I.L.D. diseases, not COVID, get PHO attention
GASTRO CASES AMONG KIDS UP 97%
WHILE COVID -19 cases in Pangasinan continue to slide down, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) is watching out for traditional diseases that usually accompany the rainy season.
Dr. Anna de Guzman, provincial health officer, said they are monitoring W.I.L.D. (Water-borne, Influenza, Leptospirosis, and Dengue) diseases.
Fortunately, according to PHO monitoring, dengue cases in the province are 86% lower compared to last year’s same period (January 1 to May 15): only 195 cases have been recorded this year from 2021’s 1,393 cases and one death.
Most dengue patients in the province were male, ages 5 to 14-years old.
Even leptospirosis cases in the province have also recorded lower cases – five cases and zero deaths have been recorded this year, compared to last year’s seven cases and one death.
However, acute gastroenteritis cases have increased by 97% compared to last year.
De Guzman said up until May 15, there were 2,170 cases of acute gastroenteritis recorded, of which 13 have died. This is alarmingly higher than last year’s 1,104 cases recorded by PHO.
“Pagsasawalang-bahala sa mga sintomas nito ang kadalasang dahilan kung bakit namamatay ang pasyente”, said de Guzman.
Most patients of acute gastroenteritis in the province are within the one to four-years old range, and main cause is usually drinking contaminated water or neglect of parents to thoroughly clean their feeding bottles and utensils. (Ahikam Pasion)
