Prepare for more rains – PAGASA
THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has already declared the onset of wet (rainy) season in the Philippines on Wednesday, May 18, deemed too early compared to previous years.
According to Gener Quitong, weather forecaster from the Agno River Basin Forecasting and Warning System of the PAGASA, the average period of declaration of the onset of the wet season happens between the last week of May to the third week of June.
In 2020, the agency declared the start of rainy season on June 12, while in 2021, it was declared on June 4.
“There are some factors to consider, such as the weakening of the Easterlies and the onset of the Southwesterly Surface Windflow”, he said.
The Southwesterly Surface Windflow is commonly called weak Southwest Monsoon. This was what caused the Philippine’s west coast, including Pangasinan, to experience rains in the past days.
In a press statement released by PAGASA on Wednesday, cited specific reasons for the early declaration.
“Areas under Type 1 Climate (areas experiencing Dry Season from December to May and Wet season from June to November) have detected the presence of frontal systems and of severe thunderstorms in the past five days – a main criteria of the weather agency to declare the entry of rainy season.”
With the wet season starting earlier than expected, Quitlong said people must prepare for rains to be more frequent and stronger.
“Mag-prepare na po tayo. Yung mga alulod, kanal at ibang daluyan ng tubig na barado, i-clear na po natin para kapag dumating na yung mga bagyo ay makapaghanda na po tayo”, he said. (Ahikam Pasion)
