FIRST ELECTION VIOLENCE
THE attempt on the life of a candidate for councilor in Malasiqui town by unidentified suspects in front of his house in Barangay Talospatang, Malasiqui on at about 7:10 P.M. on April 3., marked the first election violence in Pangasinan.
The victim, Alexis Mamaril, 53, an incumbent barangay kagawad of Talospatang, sustained gunshot wounds on his right cheek, chest area and right arm and was rushed to a nearby hospital in Malasiqui where he was treated.
A Special Investigation Task Group Mamaril (SITG Mamaril) was formed by P/Colonel Richmond Tadina, police provincial director, to investigate the incident and to expedite the solution of the chase.
P/Lt Col. Jose Abaya II, Malasiqui Police chief, said the victim was standing in front of his house while waiting for some packed lunch for his campaign team, when two still unidentified suspects on board a motorcycle stopped and shot him several times.
Abaya said Mamaril was grazed on his chest area, while he sustained a gunshot wound in the arm. One of his eyes was also shot, and exited in the latter’s left cheek.
Several empty shells for Caliber pistol were recovered near the crime scene.
As of writing, Abaya said that Mamaril is alive and conscious.
Asked on whether he received death threats or had any dispute lately, Abaya said he had none.
Mamaril is running under the ticket of incumbent Malasiqui Mayor Noel Geslani, who is seeking a second term this coming May 2022 NLE.
