April 5, special non-working holiday in Pangasinan
MALACANANG Palace declared Apr. 5 as a special non-working holiday in Pangasinan on the occasion of its 442nd founding anniversary.
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on March 29 signed and issued Proclamation Number 1334, declaring Tuesday next week as a special non-working holiday throughout the province.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the Province of Pangasinan be given the full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies, subject to the public health measures of the national government,” the proclamation reads.
In 2010, the province started to celebrate its founding anniversary pursuant to Provincial Ordinance No. 143-2010 which was approved by the provincial board recognizing Apr. 5, 1580 as the official founding day of the province.
It was on April 5, 1572, when Pangasinan was made an encomienda and later re organized into a political unit under an alcalde mayor after eight years that Pangasinan has become a province.
Hence, Pangasinan adopted April 5, 1580 as the official founding day of the province.
The province was named after the word “Panag-asinan” which means a place of salt where the province is known for producing quality salt products, particularly in Dasol town, located in the western part of the province.
According to the Center for Pangasinan Studies, Pangasinan can be traced to the Austonesian languages and closer to the Ibaloi language.
Before the ordinance was enacted, the province used to celebrate Pangasinan Day every November 13, simultaneous to the commemoration of the birth anniversary of the late Eugenio Perez, the first Speaker of the House of Representative.
Perez’s birth date was declared a special non-working holiday in the entire province every year in 1990. (Jerick Pasiliao)
