COVID-10 cases further shrink in Pangasinan
THE number of active cases of COVID-19 in Pangasinan cases continues to shrink in many towns and cities of the province as shown by latest data released by the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
The data shows there were only 944 active cases remaining in hospitals, isolation facilities and on home quarantine as of February 3, shrinking by about a half when compared to the four-digit data of 1,844 active cases recorded a week before on January 27.
This happened on a week when the number of recoveries went up to 2,044 while the number of new cases was pegged at 1,150. But 22 persons died from the disease.
The big drop of cases in Pangasinan for a week was indicated by the seven-day daily average of 160 cases from January 28 to February 1, compared to the seven-day daily average of 300 from January 21 to 27 as compiled by the Provincial Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (PESU) of the PHO.
Records showed that the latest surge of COVID-19 peaked on January 22 with 488 cases logged, the highest number ever recorded in a day since the start of the year, then was down to just 119 cases on February 3 in a matter of 12 days.
All indications show COVID-19 is on a downtrend despite the confirmed presence of the highly transmissible Omicron variant in Pangasinan and Dagupan City.
But whether the slowdown will continue remains to be seen as the campaign period for national candidates will start February 8.
The latest count brought the total number of COVID-19 cases in the province to 43,159. Of the number, 39,912 had recovered and 1,303 had died.
Dagupan remained as the epicenter of the pandemic in Pangasinan with 317 active cases as of February 2.
Among the component towns and cities with more cases were Calasiao with 75 cases, followed by Malasiqui and Sta. Barbara (55 each), Binmaley (52), Urdaneta City (53), Lingayen (50), Bayambang (47), Mangatarem (47) and Rosales (24). (Leonardo Micua)
