THE number of active COVID-19 cases in Region 1 last week was down to 280 as cases continued their downward trend in all the region’s four provinces, including Dagupan City.

The latest monitoring of the Department of Health-Center for Health Development 1

on December 8 showed La Union with the most number of active cases at 115, overtaking Pangasinan, with only 77 cases, followed by Ilocos Sur, 46; Ilocos Norte, 39; and Dagupan City, 3.

Speaking during the virtual presser hosted by Philippine Information Agency 1., Dr. Rheuel Bobis, COVID-19 focal person in Region 1, said the 280 remaining active cases was only .04 percent of the 93,936 total confirmed cases registered in the region. Of the number, 91,535 or 97.4 percent recovered and 2, 121 or 2.2 percent died.

Of the remaining cases, 154 were asymptomatic or without any symptoms; 90 had mild symptoms, 26 were moderate or with clinical signs of non-severe pneumonia and 10 were diagnosed to have severe pneumonia.

“The good news is that as of the moment we have no critical active case or acute case of severe respiratory syndrome or sepsis.” Bobis said.

He recalled when the first surge of cases was seen in July and cases increased by 77.5 percent compared to the cases in June while in August, the cases increased only by 54.4 percent compared to July’s and finally in September, the cases increased only by 47.6 percent from August’s data.

It was in September, he said, when the cases in Region 1 began to decline at a fast rate, adding that in October the decrease was 53 percent compared to September’s tally, and in November, the cases went down by 87.5 percent compared to the figure in October.

According to Bobis, from November to December, the average cases were down to 19 per day compared to 963 cases per day at the peak of the surge in July and a daily average of 573 new cases in August.

Delta, the most dominant COVID-19 variant in the region accounted for 65 percent or 358 cases; Alpha, 19.4 percent or 124; Beta 15 percent or 89;  and Theta, one percent or 3.
