A FAMILY of four were buried alive when a concrete wall collapsed and crushed their house following a mud slide in mountainous Sitio Paliwan, Barangay Sagunto in Sison town at about 6:10 p.m. on October 12 at the height of Typhoon Maring.

A report of P/Major Arturo Melchor Jr., public information officer of the Pangasinan Police Provincial  Office (PPPO) identified the fatalities as Jomar Aquino, 28; his common-law-wife  Jasmine Stocapio, 22; their daughter Mary Jane Aquino, 3; and John Christian Salvatoerra, 7, of Barangay Artacho, Sison, a nephew of Jasmine.

Joint retrieval and rescue operations were conducted starting at 7:00 p.m. that day by elements of the Sison Police and of Fire Stations as well as from the Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office and Rural Health Unit. And when they were found, they were all already dead.

The cadavers of the victims were all brought to the covered court of Barangay Sagunto.

Another person drowned in Lingayen and a woman was electrocuted in same town as a result of Typhoon “Maring”.

The woman electrocuted was identified as Ana Marie Ventayen, 24, who was sleeping in the flooring of their house where water was dripping from the rooftop. The water drenched  a running electric fan, which became electrically charged, causing  the woman to be electrocuted.

Then, a 59-year-old fisherman left his house in Brgy. Poblacion, Lingayen and went to the nearby Basign River to set up a fish trap to catch fish. However, due to the sudden surge of flood waters on the fishpond, the victim slipped and eventually drowned.

In Alcala, after days of conducting search and retrieval operations, authorities were able to find the body of a 19-year-old farmer who also drowned at the farm.

Found was one Michael Alvarez, 19, of Barangay Gualsic, Alcala, who might have fallen to the Agno River while he and his employee went to secure drums they were using in planting crops. (Leonardo Micua/Eva Visperas/Jerick Pasiliao)
