‘Maring’ leaves over P200-M damage in agriculture

FARMERS and fishermen in Pangasinan suffered an estimated P263.7 million in losses as a result of the strong winds and heavy rains brought about by severe tropical storm ‘Maring’ last week.

This amount of damages to farmlands and fishponds was reported by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

The report identified 21 hectares of rice land of farmers submerged in floodwater and led to damages amounting to P110.9 million, while P53.5 million worth high-value crops was lost; corn farmers lost P15.6 million worth and the fishery sector lost P83.7 million.

Provincial assistant agriculturist Nestor Batalla said, affected farmers in the province will soon receive certified palay, corn, and vegetable seeds from the Department of Agriculture and the provincial government as aid.

Fishpond operators and fishermen. will receive tilapia and bangus fingerlings.

Meanwhile, the livestocsxs k raisers losses amounted to an estimated P1.9 million while damages to infrastructure amounted to P18.9 million. (Jerick Pasiliao)
