IN an unprecedented move, the provincial government asked the Regional Inter-Agency-Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to place Pangasinan under the higher classification status of General Community Quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restrictions from September 1 – 15 in view of the rising cases of COVID-19.

The request was contained in a letter addressed to the National IATF through Regional Director Julie Daquioag, chair of the Regional IATF, signed by Governor Amado Espino III that sought a stricter community quarantine classification and higher risk classification of the province in order to arrest the surge of COVID-19.

Dr. Rheul Bobis, COVID-19 focal person in Region, said Governor Espino’s letter was endorsed immediately by the Region al IATF-EID to the National IATF-EID but no action has so far made on the same.

Gov. Espino said the escalation of the quarantine risk classification to GCQ with heightened restrictions “shall allow us to implement more stringent protocols to curb the rapid spread of the dreaded disease.”

Enclosed in the governor’s letter is Resolution No. 005-2021 signed by members of the provincial IATF that cited the number of positive COVID-19 cases recorded over the past days starting August 22, with 202 new cases followed by 317 on August 23, then 344 on August 24, then 489 on August 25 and rose to 592 on August 26.

In a video post, Governor Espino justified his request for hover quarantine classification with heightened restriction for Pangasinan and went on to call all Pangasinenses to unite and fight the disease.

He said the daily COVID-19 data are alarming as he revealed that all hospitals are now overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients.

The governor called on all Pangasinenses to get themselves vaccinated for them to build a long-time immunity against COVID-19. (Leonardo Micua)
