Residents urged to be vigilant vs. Delta variant

RESIDENTS in Pangasinan are urged to be vigilant against the Delta variant which can spread faster than the ordinary COVID-19 strain.

The call was made by Dr. Anna de Guzman, provincial health officer, as she maintained that while no Delta variant has been detected in COVID patients in Pangasinan so far, she confirmed that a returning Overseas Filipino Worker was reported to have been exposed to a Delta variant positive on his way home, but his RT-PCR showed negative result.

De Guzman said the Delta variant is a new variant of COVID-19 that originated from India, first detected in December 2020 – and is highly contagious and lethal.

She stressed the importance of strictly sticking with the health protocols like wearing of facemasks and face shields, physical distancing, frequent handwashing and the need to get vaccinated regardless of the brand for effective protection.

She pointed out that the vaccine serves as additional layer of protection against the Delta variant.

She also urged families to have proper ventilation at home or at the work place to ensure the proper circulation of air to prevent the virus from being suspended in the air, a situation that happens in a closed area.

De Guzman also urged residents of coastal communities to be on alert on foreign vessels docking or dropping anchors near their area on stormy days and warned against possible infection from the crew if they have not been tested.

Symptoms related to the Delta variant, according to De Guzman, include fever, colds, runny nose, sore throat, body pains, loss of sense of smell and absence of sense of taste.

She advised persons afflicted with the variant to pay more attention to respiratory tract infections, nausea and vomiting. (Leonardo Micua/ PIO-RRB)
