DOH tags Region 1 as “high risk” for COVID-19 infection
THE Ilocos Region has been classified as one of the “high risk” areas in the country by the Department of Health (DOH) owing to its level of COVID-19 infections.
DOH Undersecretary Rosario Vergeire cited the region’s average daily attack rate (ADAR) of 8.47 cases per 100,000 population while its healthcare and intensive care unit (ICU) utilization rates are at 59.01 percent and 72.78 percent, respectively.
Vergeire said once a region’s ADAR reaches the seven-case mark or higher, it is considered “high risk”.
Meanwhile, the region’s Center for Health Development CHD 1 recorded 38,895 total infections with 30,959 recoveries and 897 deaths last Wednesday, August 4..
Pangasinan still logged the highest number of infections with 13,546; La Union 9,060, Ilocos Norte 8,841, Ilocos Sur 5,370, and Dagupan City 2,078.
CHD 1 COVID-19 focal person Dr. Rheuel Bobis also warned of the possible surge of the more dreaded Delta variant in the region.
He said the region logged only one case of COVID-Delta in Ilocos Norte so the sudden surge of COVID-19 infections in the province still cannot be attributed to the Delta variant. The region’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit has yet to determine that, he added.
Bobis said one of the possible reasons of the surge were the many reported social events attended by many and disregarded the call for minimum health and safety protocols and failure of families to observe the protocols. (Jerick Pasiliao /Ahikam Pasion)
