War on drugs has a long way to go – PNP chief
THE war against illegal drugs in the country still has a long way to go but the problem on illegal drugs in the country has remarkably improved compared to five years ago.
That’s how Philippine National Police chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar views the campaign against illegal drugs and drug syndicates.
Eleazar made the statement during a press conference last Wednesday, June 30.
President Duterte launched his aggressive war on drugs after assuming office in 2016 was confident he could end the illegal drug trade in six months. He was subsequently attacked by human rights groups and claimed thousands of victims of alleged extra judicial killings.
He said government faced a lot of challenges in the implementation of the war on drugs and PNP has learned much for the improvement and adoption of a more effective strategy along the way.
Eleazar said the improvement is evident with the decrease of drug-related index crime rate.
“Kung ikukumpara natin five years ago, we have seen the crime incidents have declined to 60 percent,” he added.
He also noted that a “whole of the community approach” involving all the sectors in the community is needed in order for the war on drugs to succeed.
He said there is a need to focus on it and further improve the situation with the help of all sectors of the community. (Eva Visperas/Jerick Pasiliao)
