Sizzling Pangasinan expected till 3rd week of May
WARNING UP VS. THUNDERSTORM
HEADS up! Expect hotter days in Dagupan City and parts of Pangasinan!
PAGASA Dagupan Chief Meteorologist Jose Estrada Jr. said the high heat index felt by Dagupan City is expected to last until third week of May.
The city recently broke the record for the highest heat index in the country this year, not once, but twice – 51 degrees on May 9, and 52 degrees on May 12.
Estrada said the intense heat felt is caused by easterlies and high sea surface temperature.
Three areas in the Philippines are contending with the highest heat index in the country: Tuguegarao City in Cagayan province, Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija, and Dagupan City in Pangasinan..
But how does Dagupan City consistently break records and topple other hotspots? Estrada explained this is because of its location as a coastal city.
“Dagupan is prone to heat, as sea temperature becomes hotter. And since heat is refracted through concrete structures, this makes the heat disperse slower – the perfect recipe for high heat index,” Estrada explained.
He said the heat index will be lower by the third week of May when the southwest monsoon (Habagat) begins blowing, bringing cooler temperature and more rains soon.
Meanwhile, Estrada urged the public to take cover when thunderstorms and hailstorms occur after Bugallon, Asingan, and Tayug experienced hailstorms.
Estrada said weather phenomenon such as thunderstorms, hail, and even tornado are normal during the months of April and May and advised persons caught in a thunderstorm, to stay away from trees or any structure with electric cables attached and structures with lightning arresters to it since these will be hit by lightning.
He also urged the public not to use cellphones outside when thunderstorms happen. (Ahikam Pasion)
