Pangasinan PNP records 41 suicide cases to date

THERE have been 41 persons who committed suicide in the province during the first quarter of 2021.

P/Major Arthur Melchor, public information officer of Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO), said issue of rising suicide cases was raised in the recently-held virtual meeting of all police chiefs in the province.

The youngest suicide case involving a ten-year-old boy was from Dasol town, while the oldest was 74-year-old man from Binalonan.

Thirty-six persons killed themselves by hanging while three shot themselves and still two others ingested poison.

Depression due to different causes contribute to 28 of the suicide cases – six of which are because of love problems, five due to family problems.

There are 10 cases still being investigated while three cases were already tagged as due to mental illnesses.

Last 2020, the PPPO has recorded a total of 101 cases from January to December.

To combat the high suicide rates, local police chiefs were ordered to coordinate with local health officers and health units, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) personnel. (Ahikam Pasion)
