THE Pangasinan Heatwaves pushed back Pasig City during the 7th Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), 82-72, last August 18  at the Alone Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.

Entering the first frame, John Felix Corpuz started strong for Pasig with his turnaround jumpers to chalk up six quick points but Heatwaves’ floor general Ian Melencio replied with his driving layups for Panginan to take the lead, 15-11.

Heading to the second period, Pasig City leaned on the steady jumpers of Jerome Garcia and posted six points to generate offense. However, Bong Galanza turned hot from beyond the arc and knocked down three triples to retain Pangasinan’s advantage at the halftime, 42-33.

Moving to the third, Melencio made his presence felt in the shaded area and seized control of the Heatwaves’ offense with his jumpers and rebounds to tally seven points and three boards, 61-44.

At the 2:47 mark of the fourth juncture, Pasig City managed to keep the score within striking distance courtesy of the eleven-point cluster of Jacob Galicia and Corpuz, 70-75.

In response, Jorey Napoles and Melencio showed up in back-to-back clutch possessions for Pangasinan. Napoles connected on a three-pointer, followed by Melencio’s finishing blow off a fade-away jumper to breakaway and seal the game.

Pangasinan relied on  Melencio with 20 points, six rebounds, and two steals alongside Napoles and Galanza with 13 points apiece.

Over at Pasig, Corpuz logged in 18 points and four rebounds, 15 points from Mark Montuano, and 10 points from Galicia.

The Pangasinan Heatwaves moved up to the fourth spot of the Northern Division standings of the 7th MPBL tourney with a 17-7 win-loss card. (Kim Gealogo)
