THE Pangasinan Heatwaves, playing on homecourt, took down the Basilan Starhorse, 83-71, in the 7th Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) last July 5 at the Robert Estrella Sr. Memorial Gymnasium in Rosales.

Sherwin Concepcion lifted Basilan’s offense through his mid-range jumpers with five points, partnered with the key drives of former PBA Champion Alex Cabagnot to build an early cushion, 22-18.

In the second frame, Heatwaves’ Vic Manuel made his presence felt with his own five points, alongside the floaters of Harvey Pagsanjan to inch closer, but these were quickly stopped by former PBA champions Cabagnot and Arwind Santos who combined with eight points to retain the Starhorse’s lead at the half, 38-35.

In the third period, Pangasinan showcased its outside shooting prowess with four triples to counter. Starhorse’s Emman Calo tried to answer with his driving layups but Heatwaves’ but Heatwaves’ bigman JP Maguliano staved off Basilan’s scoring punch off his post hook shots and scored four points to snatch the lead, 62-59.

Heading to the fourth, Basilan went on a cold shooting streak, only draining five field goals with 31% shooting, while the Heatwaves continued to knock down shots and scored 50% from the field. Hesed Gabo led Pangasinan’s fourth quarter scoring with five points to pull ahead and claim the victory.

Pangasinan banked on the scoring production of Gabo with 15 points, four rebounds, and six assists, followed by the 10-point output of Bong Galanza.

Meanwhile, Basilan grabbed 13 points from Cabagnot, nine points from Calo, alongside the eight points and eight boards of Santos.
