San Carlos karate jin bags bronze in SEA championships

FIFTEEN-year-old Johnzen Resngit of Clark Educational Center in San Carlos City made the country proud when he brought home a bronze medal in Cadet Kumite Male 70kg from the 12th Southeast Asian Karate Federation Championships (SEAKF) 2025 held  June 17-19  at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Brunei Darussalam.

The two-day competition was joined by top-level karate jins from Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Iran, Krgyzstan, India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and host Brunei Darussalam.

During the tournament’s first round, Resngit had a rousing start and produced a lopsided victory against Bing-Chang Chiuan of Chinese Taipei, 5-1.

In the second round, Resngit fell short against Hong Kong’s Lui To Ming in a tight battle, 4-5.

Resngit tallied the third-highest points in his class with nine points to secure the bronze podium finish.

“Representing the country against the best of the best is an incredible honor, all the intense physical and mental preparation for this big event has paid off,” he said.

The Grade 10 karate jin is training under the mentorship of Philippine National Team Karate coaches Oliver Mañalac, Mae Soriano and Rhodee Saavedra. (Kim Gealogo)
