THE Pangasinan Heatwaves sizzled hot when they took down the Marikina Shoemasters in a blowout, 103-79, in the 7th Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) last June 9, 2025, held at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.

During the first period, Marikina’s Karl Peñano feasted in the painted area to tally seven points. On the other hand, Pangasinan’s homegrown talent, King Gurtiza, anchored the team’s offense through his outside shooting with two three-point conversions and eight points to erect an early lead, 22-12.

Shoemasters’ Jethro Escoto found his scoring touch in the second quarter and delivered seven points, but these were quickly countered by Ralph Robin’s back-to-back triples to preserve the Heatwaves advantage in halftime, 41-33.

In the third quarter, Pangasinan sustained its momentum, shooting 60% from the field against the 42% of Marikina, 70-51.

In the fourth frame, Marikina tried to quell Pangasinan’s offensive blitz through Nemesis Dela Cruz and Jomel Landayan’s 11-point cluster, but these were not enough to outmatch the scoring onslaught of Heatwaves’ Gurtiza with 11 points down the stretch to pull away for good.

Pangasinan banked on Gurtiza, who registered a career-high 29 points, seven rebounds, and two assists to take the best player honors. Jorey Napoles gathered 14 points while Robin added 11 markers.

Meanwhile, Marikina chalked up 19 points from Dela Cruz, 11 points from Jomel Landayan, and 10 points courtesy of Jethro Escoto.

The Pangasinan Heatwaves rose to the fifth spot of the Northern Division standings in the 7th MPBL season with a 9-4 win-loss card. (Kim Gealogo)
