Abra thwarts Pangasinan in MPBL, 75-68
THE Pangasinan Heatwaves suffered a gut-wrenching loss from the Abra Weavers in a close contest, 75-68, during the 7th Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) last June 14 at the University of Bangued Gymnasium in Abra.
The Weavers were off to a hot start with 59% field goal efficiency against the 38% of the Heatwaves in the first frame. CJ Austria led Abra’s scoring surge through his putback layups and tallied six points to gain an early cushion, 29-19.
Pangasinan kept its tenacity in the second period, powered by Vic Manuel’s mid-range shooting to register with seven points to cut the deficit within a single digit at the end of the half, 38-43.
Coasting along the third, Abra fought back through its transition layups and key drives to counter Pangasinan’s half-court defense. Dave Ildefonso erupted for 10 points and five boards to stretch the Weavers’ advantage, 65-52.
Midway in the fourth, Hesed Gabo and Jorey Napoles connived for eight points to keep Pangasinan within the striking distance, 60-66. However, Abra’s Raven Gonzales came up hot and responded with his six-point cluster to stop the Heatwave’s scoring run to clinch the victory.
Ildefonso towed Abra with 18 points and five rebounds, alongside the 15 points and seven boards of Encho Serrano, while Austria added 12 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.
For Pangasinan, Hesed Gabo gathered 16 points, three rebounds, and five assists, followed by 11 points and five rebounds of Manuel, plus the 10 markers and eight rebounds of Napoles.
The Pangasinan Heatwaves will see action against the Bacolod Tubo Slashers on June 21 at the Sentrong Pangkabataan in Oriental Mindoro. (Kim Gealogo)
