VMUF high jumper bags silver in international competition
KENT Brian Celeste, a third-year Physical Education student of Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation, made Pangasinan proud after clinching a silver podium finish in the Men’s High Jump category at the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championship held May 4 at the New Clark City Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
Over 1,000 athletes from different countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, India, and Papua New Guinea, saw action in the event that serves as the basis for the selection of members of the national team that will be sent to the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand in December.
Competing against 12 elite high jumpers, the 23-year old Celeste posted his personal best and cleared the 2.14-meter mark to outclass Philippine high jump record holder Leonard Grospe of Mapua University (2.12 m), while Mohd Dahalan of Malaysia emerged at the top (2.16 m).
“After three attempts to qualify internationally in high jump, I finally had the opportunity to play against the best jumpers in the country and in Southeast Asia. Breaking my personal best of 2.10 meters and winning an award at this level of competition is such an overwhelming feeling, all my hard work and sacrifices come into fruition,” he said.
Celeste is a member of Spectrum Runners Philippines under the mentorship of head coach Gerry Mayo. (Kim Gealogo)
