Pangasinan drubs Davao Occidental in MPBL, 76-68

THE Pangasinan Heatwaves outmatched the Davao Occidental Tigers in a battle of attrition, 76-68, in the ongoing 7th Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League held  May 26 at the Batangas City Coliseum.

Pangasinan was off to a slow start, only shooting 4 out of 15. On the other hand, Davao Occidental showcased its paint scoring prowess through Jeff Comia and Sam Peralta, who connived for eight points and seven rebounds to tally a lead, 16-13.

In the second period, Pangasinan drew offense from King Gurtiza with five points off the bench. On the counter, Tigers’ Valandre Chauca replied with his back-to-back triples to retain Davao’s advantage entering the half at 31-26.

In the third frame, the Heatwaves caught fire and staged a 12-point run led by Harvey Pagsanjan with six points to make a push, 49-50.

Heading to the fourth, a see-saw tussle unfolded between the fiery teams with three deadlocks and three lead changes. Ian Melencio exploded for 12 points to steer Pangasinan’s rally with his running floater and jumpers.

Chauca tried to bail out Davao with eight points, but Pangasinan pulled ahead courtesy of two consecutive putback layups of Vic Manuel to claim the victory.

Pangasinan rode on Melencio’s 22 points, five rebounds, and five assists, followed by 19 points from Manuel. Michael Mabulac and Harvey Pagsanjan provided support with 12 markers apiece.

Over at Davao,  Chauca chalked up 15 points; Sam Peralta posted 13 points and 11 rebounds; while Comia garnered 12 points and eight rebounds.
