Gensan beats Pangasinan in MPBL, 88-79
THE Gensan Warriors dealt the Pangasinan Heatwaves its fourth loss in the 7th Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League when they staged a come-from-behind victory, 88-79, on May 8 at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Heatwaves’ Ian Melencio waxed hot early in the game through his driving layups with six points and three assists.
Warriors’ Chris Masaglang quickly countered with his own six markers to trail Pangasinan, 13-14.
In the second quarter, a see-saw battle ensued with two deadlocks and two lead changes. Gensan’s Ammar Cosari scored a putback layup to knot the score at 32 at halftime.
Reeling off in the third period, Pangasinan showcased its collective scoring prowess, powered by Vic Manuel, Bong Galanza, and Michael Mabulac to combine for 10 points to take a double-digit cushion, 59-46.
In the final frame, Gensan picked up its offensive rhythm in the game when Masagalang and Kyle Tolentino sparked a 19-point cluster. On the flipside, Pangasinan struggled offensively and went on a 3-minute scoring drought.
With three minutes remaining, Heatwaves’ Galanza tried to bail out Pangasinan and nailed a triple to even up the score at 67, but Warriors’ Nico Elorde took over in the clutch with seven points and a dagger three-pointer to snatch the win.
Gensan leaned on Masagalang and Tolentino with 15 points apiece, plus the 13-point burst of Elorde.
On the other hand, Pangasinan chalked up 18 points from Galanza alongside the 12-point, 6- rebound, and 5-assist effort of Melencio.
Pangasinan will gear up in the hardcourt against Pasay Voyagers on May 17 at the Nueva Ecija Coliseum. (Kim Gealogo)
