FOURTEEN-year-old Leila Jell Cano of the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) demonstrated her exceptional marksmanship skills when she captured one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in the U18 Women’ Recurve during the National Archery Championship last January 23-26, 2025 held at the STI Goldtoe Archery Range in Marikina City.

Hosted by the World Archery Philippines, the tournament was participated in by over 160 elite archers in the biggest archery tilt ever in the country.

Cano delivered a strong performance in the Olympic Rounds of U18 Women Recurve 60m to outclass the second-seeded Vernice Garcia of Olympus Archery Philippines, followed by Emy Peredo of the Baguio City Archery Club, to claim the gold medal.

She secured the silver in the Olympic Rounds of Open Category Women 70m and grabbed two bronze medals in U18 Qualifying Rounds 60m and Open Women 70m.

“We practiced on the fundamentals such as physical conditioning and mental focus in order to perform at the highest level in the national stage. This remarkable feat would not have been possible without consistency, discipline, dedication, and guidance of my supportive family,” she said.

Cano is currently training under the mentorship of Federico Lopez Jr. of the San Carlos City Archery Club. (Kim Gealogo)
