UL’s Golden Tigers are champs
1st PANGASINAN COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
THE University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers mauled the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes to take home the championship crown, 78-62, in the win-or-go-home match of the inaugural tournament of the Pangasinan Collegiate Basketball League last February 7 at the Dagupan City People’s Astrodome.
During the opening frame, Jhomel Sansano paced the Golden Tigers with five points through his outside shooting alongside the interior presence of Michael Lambino with four points and two blocks.
Heading to the second quarter, the Dukes tried to exchange buckets through driving layups of Maverick Navarro and Kenz Bugarin to combine with nine points, but the Tiger’s Sansano swiftly retaliated with nine points for UL to sustain a sizeable lead in the halftime, 38-25.
Advancing to the third, the LNU boys kept their poise and responded with nine unanswered points through the combined efforts of Victor Delos Reyes and Navarro to cut the lead to a single digit, 46-55.
The Golden Tigers greeted the fourth with an incendiary shooting performance, drilling four triples against one for the Dukes. The Tigers’ Sansano and Pepito Panganiban connived for 12 points with two three-pointers apiece to pull away for good and secure the championship.
Sansano led the Golden Tigers with 22 points and two steals plus the double-double ouput of Lambino with 12 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Sansano was hailed as the Finals MVP of the tourney.
Over at LNU, Navarro gathered a team-high 11 points and two blocks.
“They played hard and maintained their composure all game long. With this accomplishment, they solidified their status as powerhouse team in the province,” UL head coach Byron Vidal said. (Kim Gealogo)
