THE Gensan Warriors dealt the Pangasinan Abono Reapers their first loss in the 4th Pilipinas Super League (PSL) President’s Cup in a gut-wrenching finish, 74-72 last January 17 at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City, Metro Manila.

During the opening period, Pangasinan’s Harvey Pagsanjan tallied an early seven points to lead the Reapers in scoring column. Gensan’s Rene Pacquiao fought back through his mid-range conversions with six points to trail Pangasinan, 18-16.

In the second quarter, Mark Cruz picked up the offensive load for the Warriors with 10 points. Gensan put on an impressive scoring display, shooting 42% from the field against 38% of the Reapers to snatch the advantage at the half, 41-37.

Advancing to the third frame, Pangasinan struggled in the offensive end, only making four field goals and produced five turnovers. On the flipside, Gensan carried the momentum via Mark Cruz’s pull-up jumpers reinforced with Jammer Jamito’s eight-point burst to stretch the lead, 60-49.

Trailing behind by three points at the last two-minute mark, Jorey Napoles nailed his third three-pointer to tie the ball game at 69. On the counter, Gensan’s Jamito delivered an end -one play off in a putback layup to retake the lead.

With 24 ticks left remaining, Reapers’ Hesed Gabo drained a three-pointer to tie the score at 72 all. However, Warriors’ Jamito answered right back with a clutch shot underneath the basket to win the game.

The Gensan Warriors got 17 points and six rebounds from Cruz combined with 17 of Jamito.

Meanwhile, Pangasinan gained 15 markers from Napoles, followed by 12 points and eight boards of Michael Juico.

The Pangasinan Abono Reapers is currently in fourth spot of the conference standings with a 3-1 record. (Kim Gealogo)
