Arquero wins Pozorrubio Rapid Chess Open tilt
THIRTY-year-old Kevin Arquero of Pasay City ruled the Pozorrubio Rapid Chess Open tournament against 90 woodpushers last January 11 at the Pozorrubio Executive Building in Pozorrubio town.
The seasoned blitz player Arquero, who represented the Philippine Army Chess Team, outclassed Robert Halili of Mabalacat City, Pampanga in the final round to score 6.5 points and claimed the P10,000 top prize.
Jhulo Goloran of Meycauayan City trounced Genghis Imperial of Manila to tally six points, tying with Halili and Romy Fagon of Urdaneta City. After the tiebreaker, Halili captured the second place followed by Goloran and Fagon as the third and fourth finishers.
Halili secured P5,000; Goloran, P3,000; and Fagon, P2,000.
Meanwhile, 11-year-old Henrick Balanos won the Pozorrubio Kiddies Category in chess and brought home P3,000.
Backed up by National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. alongside the Pozorrubio local government led by Mayor Kelvin Chan, the tournament aims to promote chess and foster the development of grassroots players in the town. (Kim Gealogo)
