Umingan NHS rules province-wide Volleyball tourney
THE Umingan National High School Boys Volleyball Team emerged victorious during the Provincewide U18 Invitational Volleyball Tournament after beating Sta. Barbara in a championship knock-out one setter game, 25-12, last December 8 at the Calasiao Sports Complex.
The one-day volleyball tournament was joined by 24 municipalities and cities across the province.
In the title match, Umingan swiftly established its impressive net defense with four kill blocks. Umingan’s tenured setter, Raine Mariano, distributed 11 excellent sets and added five points to gain a sizeable lead.
Sta. Barbara’s Ron Cortez unleashed back-to-back off-the-block hits with four quick points in response, but these only went to naught when Umingan open spikers Angelo Fernandez and Ron Andrei De Vera combined with eight points to pull away for good.
Among the individual awardees of the tournament are Raine Mariano (Finals MVP), Angelo Fernandez (Best Opposite Spiker), Ron Andrei De Vera (Best Server), and Chester Mina (Best Libero).
“These young guys have developed the winning mentality over the past year, they are disciplined, they trust each other, and their bond together as a team is one of their major strengths,” Umingan NHS head coach Eusebio Solis said. (Kim Gealogo)
