Asingan wins Inter-town Basketball tourney
THE Asingan basketball team took home the championship crown after drubbing San Nicolas in a pulsating overtime thriller, 103-101, during the title match of the inaugural Rosales United Stars Athletic Club (RUSAC) 5th and 6th District Inter-town Basketball tournament last December 15 at the Robert B. Estrella Memorial Stadium in Rosales.
Leading the best-of-five series with 2-1 record, Asingan’s Mark Fabia anchored the scoring load with six early points but San Nicolas’ Eden Trinidad quickly responded with eight points from the shaded area to build a narrow lead, 24-23.
In the second frame, Mesha Torres provided eight points off his key drives to navigate Asingan’s offense. On the counter, San Nicolas’ Joshua Panumbarit drilled three consecutive mid-range jumpers with six points to preserve the narrow gap at the half, 44-41.
At the third juncture, San Nicolas caught fire from beyond the arc with four three-point conversions against one of Asingan to extend the cushion, 71-60.
With 10 seconds left in the fourth, Asingan rallied back in clutch time when Fabia buried a baseline jumper to forge an extension, 91-91.
Heading to the extra period, a see-saw battle unfurled between the two teams with seven deadlocks and six lead changes. With four seconds remaining, Fabia scored the game-winning shot off an alley-hoop play assisted by RJ Alcantara to win the game.
Asingan banked on Fabia’s 26-point performance alongside Torres’ 25 markers.
San Nicolas gathered 21 points from Panumbarit combined with the 10-point output of Vernon Dudan Cruz.
Among the mythical five members and individual awardees are Layvie Rovellos (Asingan, Season MVP), Mark Fabia (Asingan, Finals MVP), Jeromel Cabonitalla (San Nicolas), Mesha Torres (Asingan), Eden Trinidad (San Nicolas), and Benjamin Adogol (Asingan, Best Coach). (Kim Gealogo)
