VMUF high jumper bags gold in PATAFA final relay
KENT Brian Celeste of the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation clinched the gold medal in high jump men’s senior division during the A-Final of the PATAFA Weekly Series last October 19 at the PhilSports Track Oval in Pasig City.
Competing against six rivals, the 23-year-old athlete cleared the 2.08-meter bar to outshine Ernie Calipay (1.94m) and Joshua Bercasio (1.85) of Far Eastern University to claim the top spot.
Celeste still finished at the top despite missing a game due to a change in schedule of the athletics events that was not made public on Week 9 of the Relay.
“I was disappointed on how they abruptly changed the schedule without prior notice, I pushed an urgent appeal to the officials and I’m glad that they allowed me and the others to participate in the final. I used it as a fuel to move forward and focus on winning the gold,” he said.
Training under the leadership of head coach Dante Camaso, Celeste is a fourth-year secondary education student of VMUF.
He also represents Spectrum Runners Philippines and holds the second-best record in PATAFA Weekly Relay with a personal best of 2.11 meters behind the 2.20 meters of Mapua’s triple gold medalist Leonardo Grospe. (Kim Gealogo)
